Can one escape the cycle of reincarnation by not losing one's temper?
According to Master Hsuan Hua's teachings, not losing one's temper (cultivating patience and cutting off the fire of ignorance) is an extremely important key and an essential path to spiritual practice and liberation. However, if one wants to completely escape the cycle of rebirth, it is also necessary to fundamentally eliminate all afflictions and ignorance such as greed, anger, and delusion.
Why is it so important not to lose your temper?
Temperament is an obstacle to spiritual practice (attaining enlightenment): Master Hsuan Hua often said, "Whoever loses their temper goes against the Way." Losing your temper (anger) is a manifestation of ignorance and selfishness, which destroys merit and increases negative karma.
Not losing your temper cultivates wisdom: People lose their temper because they feel wronged and are swayed by external circumstances. By not losing your temper and cultivating patience, the mind becomes peaceful and pure, giving rise to true wisdom.
Not losing one's temper is a form of spiritual practice: The Venerable Master once taught that one doesn't need to learn too much Buddhism; simply being able to avoid anger and temper is understanding the Dharma. He even humorously said that reciting the "Sutra on Not Losing One's Temper" can lead to rapid enlightenment.
Is it possible to directly escape the cycle of reincarnation?
Subduing one's temper is fundamental: Not losing one's temper means you have the ability to control your emotions and anger (observance of precepts and patience). If one cannot even control their temper and easily becomes enraged, the root cause of life and death cannot be eradicated.
One must completely eradicate greed, anger, and ignorance: To truly escape the three realms and be free from reincarnation, one must thoroughly study and understand the source of life (such as the twelve links of dependent origination) and eradicate the three poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance. Not losing one's temper resolves anger; simultaneously, one must let go of greed and ignorance.
In summary, not losing one's temper is the core key and starting point for escaping the cycle of reincarnation; if one can truly achieve a state of being free from anger both internally and externally, a state of harmony, and the elimination of all delusions, one will not be far from liberation from the cycle of reincarnation.
