This ten-year Buddhist practice plan focuses on "gradual progression" and "implementation": from establishing right faith and taming body and mind, to delving into the scriptures and practicing altruism. Practice is unhurried, integrating Buddhist teachings into daily life, ensuring solid progress step by step.
Phase One: Establishing Foundations and Taming (Years 1-3)
Year 1: Establishing Right Faith and Dignity
Study the meaning of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and understand the concept of cause and effect.
Cultivate a daily 15-minute practice (paying homage to the Buddha, basic morning and evening recitations).
Practice the Five Precepts and Ten Virtues, correcting daily actions of body, speech, and mind.
Year 2: Foundational Buddhism and Merit Cultivation
Participate in foundational courses at orthodox Buddhist centers (such as the Sheng Yen Academy Buddhist Studies Class or Merit Cultivation Class at Dharma Drum Mountain).
Learn to volunteer, cultivating patience, sowing seeds of merit, and overcoming ego through serving the public.
Year 3: Beginner Meditation and Concentration
Learn breath awareness and breath counting to calm a scattered mind.
Participate in one- or two-day short meditation retreats to experience relaxation of body and mind.
Phase Two: Emphasis on Understanding and Practice, and Deepening Theory (Years 4–7)
Year 4: Study of the Sutras (Foundation Classics)
Read and contemplate short but important classic texts, such as the *Heart Sutra*, the *Diamond Sutra*, or the *Eight Great Awakenings Sutra*.
Learn to "observe the impermanence of the mind" and practice being mindful of emotions in both favorable and unfavorable circumstances.
Year 5: Conduct and Morality in Daily Life
Gain a deeper understanding of the Bodhisattva path, learning the Four Means of Attraction (generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and cooperation).
Bring mindfulness into your work and family life, and treat every interpersonal interaction as a place for spiritual practice.
Year 6: Intermediate-Level Meditation and Deep Awareness
Extend daily meditation time to 30 minutes.
Learn to counteract greed, anger, and ignorance, reducing inner conflict and afflictions.
Year 7: Extensive Learning and Altruistic Practice
Read the history and doctrines of various schools of Buddhism or Mahayana scriptures (such as Madhyamaka and Yogacara).
Participate in charitable relief, Dharma protection, or environmental protection volunteer work to practice non-attached (non-selective, non-clingy) giving.
Phase Three: Harmony and Insight (Years 8-10)
Year 8: Deep Contemplation of Emptiness and No-Self
Study the wisdom of emptiness to counteract strong attachment to self and things.
Practice "observing the non-self of phenomena" to see clearly the nature of the arising and ceasing of all phenomena due to causes and conditions.
Year 9: Stabilizing Composure and Inner Peace
Possessing the "power of concentration and wisdom" to maintain inner peace amidst a dynamic life.
Regularly engage in three to five days of silent retreat or intensive meditation retreats to calm the mind and body.
Year 10: Self-Benefit and Benefiting Others, Continuous Practice and Vows
Reflecting on ten years of practice, adjusting habitual tendencies, and making compassion and wisdom an instinct of life.
Making a long-term Bodhisattva vow, silently influencing and benefiting those around you through your own stable example.
