Lecture by Master Xuyun

What to put down? It is to let go of all "ignorance and worries".

How can you let go successfully?

We have also sent off those who have passed away. Try to curse that dead body a few times, he won't get angry; hit him a few times with a stick, he won't fight back. No more struggling with ignorance, no more chasing after fame and fortune, and many of the daily polluted habits are gone. No longer differentiate between things and let go of everything. Fellow Taoists! This body of ours, once it stops breathing, becomes a dead body. The reason we cannot let go of it is because we value it, and thus give rise to the ideas of right and wrong, love and hate, and choice. If we recognize that this body is a dead body, do not treasure it, and do not regard it as myself at all, then what else can't be let go?

As long as you can let go, at all times, whether walking, standing, sitting or lying down, active or quiet, busy or idle, there is only one Hua Tou in your whole body, and you continue to doubt peacefully without any other thoughts. One sentence Hua Tou, it is like the long sword of Yitian. If a demon comes, it can kill the demon. If a Buddha comes, it can kill the Buddha. It is not afraid of any delusion. What can distract you? There is no remaining thought to differentiate between movement and stillness. There is no thought to cling to "existence" or "emptiness".

If you are afraid of delusion, then you will add another layer of delusion; If you have the intention to "enlighten to be pure", you are already unclean; If you have the thought of "fear of falling into emptiness", you have already fallen into "Bhava (existence)"; If you want to become a Buddha, you have already entered the path of Māra. The so-called carrying water and firewood are all profound Tao; hoeing the fields and farming are all Zen secrets. To practice the Dao diligently does not mean just sitting cross-legged in meditation all day.
